In accordance with section 83, p. 3c and section 91, p. 2 of the Constitution of the Republic of Suriname the President and Vice-President are elected by the National Assembly with a qualified majority (two-thirds). There were two presidential candidates and two vice-presidential candidates.The election took place in a special meeting of the National assembly on August 4, 2000. The results were as follows:

Runaldo Ronald Venetiaan was elected as President. After this result Mrs Jennifer Geerlings - Simons withdrew her candidacy in favor of Jules Rattankumar Ajodhia, who was elected unopposed as Vice-President.
