1995- Quebec Sovereignty
Question: Do you agree that Quebec should become sovereign, after having made a formal offer to Canada for a new Economic and Political partnership, within the scope of the Bill respecting the future of Quebec and the agreement signed on June 12, 1995?Turn-out: 94.5%Results: No- 50.58%Yes- 49.42% (Referendum defeated) 1992- Amendments to Constitution of Canada (Charlottetown Accord) Question: The question asked for approval for amendments that would grant Quebec "distinct society" status, as well as provide for greater decentralization of powers with respect to federal-provincial relations and federal institutions such as the Senate. Two separate referenda were held- one in Quebec, and one for the rest of Canada.Results: National: No- 54.3%; Yes- 44.7%Quebec: No- 55.4%; Yes- 42.4% 1980- Quebec Sovereignty- Association Question: The government of Qubebec has made public its proposal to negotiate a new agreement with the rest of Canada, based on the equality of nations; This agreement would enable Quebec to acquire the exlusive power to make its laws, levy its taxes and establish relations abroad-- in other words, sovereignty-- and, at the same time, to maintain with Canada an economic association including a common currency; No change in political status resulting from these negotiations will be effected without approval by the people through another referendum; On these terms, do you give the government of Quebec the mandate to negotiate the proposed agreement between Quebec and Canada?Turn-out: 85.6%Results: No- 59.56%Yes- 40.44% Source: Elections Canada |
